Hall 10 × 30: the anatomy of the most requested size — sections, mass, price, permits

Ten times thirty metres — three hundred square metres — is the most frequent size we are asked about: large enough for a serious warehouse, a machine shop or a smaller plant, small enough to stay within a reasonable budget. Instead of general sentences, we have dissected our own standard hall: which sections carry it, why exactly those, what one structural type covers — and two legal facts on which, at this very size, both the timescale and the paperwork depend.
The anatomy of the structure, element by element

This combination — a strong column, a slimmer rafter, a haunch at the connection — is the classic school of the portal frame with a pinned bearing at the foundation. It is neither penny-pinching nor overkill: the moment is taken where it arises, and the foundation stays simple.
A mass you can check for yourself
The total mass of the primary structure in the calculation is 7,438 kg. That figure can be checked with schoolroom arithmetic: 12 IPE 330 columns (49.1 kg/m) at a height of 5 m give ~2,950 kg; IPE 240 rafters (30.7 kg/m) over 6 frames ~1,870 kg; the rest is the haunches, the gusset and base plates, the struts and the bracings. Once it is all added up with the allowance for welds, the sum settles into the calculation — and that is exactly the point of a publicly published price: a quotation that can be recalculated is a quotation that can be trusted.
Why a standard hall is cheaper: the coverage rule
In the European practice of standard halls a simple rule applies: a structure calculated for a span L and a frame spacing a covers every building of a smaller span and a closer spacing without a new calculation — the German standard structural designs expressly allow it. In practice: the 10×30 type is not one hall but a family of halls— 10×24, 10×18, 9×30… — for which the structural calculation is not done from scratch. The calculation is paid for once, and that is also the reason why a standard structure can have a public price and a “hall to order” cannot.
The limit holds in the other direction too: a wider span or more widely spaced frames = a new calculation. Anyone who offers you “the same hall, only a bit wider” for a span of 12 m without a new structural calculation is offering you a hall without structural analysis.
Two legal facts for this very size
The first: a span of 10 metres sits exactly at the threshold for the checking engineer.A design check is mandatory for spans of “10 m and more” (Ordinance on Design Checking NN 32/14, 72/20, 90/23, Art. 3) — so a 10×30 hall doesgo to a checking engineer, even though it has only 300 m². That is an additional step in the procedure which an honest schedule has to contain, and a dishonest one “forgets”.
The second: as an agricultural building, a 10×30 goes to a conceptual design. With its 300 m² of gross floor area it is well below the limit of 600 m², so the permit is issued on the basis of the conceptual design (ZoG NN 155/25, Art. 62) — we have described the whole easier route step by step. The same building as a commercial warehouse goes the classic way, to a main design (Art. 64).
