Verge flashings — application, standard and installation

Where it is used

The verge flashing closes the edge of the roof at the gable (the verge): it covers the barge board and the edge of the roof covering and stops the wind from driving rain under the covering. Modeco makes it in versions for different details — with a drip edge, wide, recessed, for the rafter board, for cladding, for battens up to the rafter and for sliding the board underneath — made to measure and in the colour of the roof covering.

The standard and what it guarantees

The sheet is steel S320GD, galvanising Z275 (275 g of zinc per m², both sides) to EN 10346, polyester coating 35 µm. It is folded on a CNC machine to a tolerance of 0.2 mm, so the profile repeats identically on every piece. The sheet standard guarantees the steel substrate and the zinc thickness, not the shape — the shape and the developed width are set by the customer.

What to watch out for during installation

It is laid from the eaves towards the ridge with the pieces overlapping in the direction of flow; the upper fold is fixed with screws with an EPDM sealing washer into the roof covering or the batten, the side fold into the barge board. The version with a drip edge (a water fold) uses an additional fold to return the water that the wind drives under the edge — it is recommended on exposed gables. At the ridge the verge flashings of both sides are closed off with the ridge flashing.

According to the detail at the gable: for the rafter board where the last rafter is clad with a board, for cladding where the soffit of the gable is clad, for battens up to the rafter where the battens end at the rafter, and for sliding the board underneath where the edge of the board tucks under the flashing. The wide version covers a taller barge board; each is folded from sheet S320GD Z275 to EN 10346.
