Where it is used

Screws fix sheet and panels to the substructure: for sheet on steel GT02, GT3, GT5, GT12, for sheet on timber GT F2 4.8 × 35 to 4.8 × 80 mm, for panels on timber GTR W 6.4/7.0 × 100–140 mm, for panels on steel GT6 SP and GT12 SP 5.5/6.3 × 90–150 mm. With them go vulcanised EPDM sealing washers 4.8×16 and 6.3×19 that seal the penetration, plastic caps in a RAL colour and blind rivets for sheet joints.

The standard and what it guarantees

No standard is stated for the screws themselves in Modeco's specifications — the screw manufacturer's declaration applies. The sheet they join is S320GD with Z275 galvanising to EN 10346, and the penetration through it is sealed by an EPDM washer 4.8×16 or 6.3×19 — without one the joint leaks regardless of the quality of the screw.

What to watch out for during installation

The screw goes in at right angles to the sheet, into the trough of the corrugation (sheet) or through both facings of the panel into the substructure; the washer is tightened only far enough for the EPDM to fill the hole — over-tightened it splits, under-tightened it leaks. The length for a panel is the panel thickness plus the engagement in the substructure: for a PIR panel of 80 mm on timber, GTR W 6.4/7.0 × 100–140 mm according to the thickness of the batten. Screws for timber do not go into steel or the other way round — their thread and their point are different.

Which screw for trapezoidal sheet on a timber substructure?

A self-drilling screw for timber GT F2 4.8 × 35 to 4.8 × 80 mm, with a vulcanised EPDM sealing washer 4.8×16; the length is chosen so that the screw passes through the trough of the corrugation and engages the batten or the rafter. For a steel substructure GT02, GT3, GT5, GT12 are used instead.

Which screw for a sandwich panel on a steel substructure?

GT6 SP and GT12 SP 5.5/6.3 × 90–150 mm, with an EPDM sealing washer 6.3×19; the length is the panel thickness plus the engagement in the steel. For a timber substructure of a panel, GTR W 6.4/7.0 × 100–140 mm is used.

Why does a screw need an EPDM sealing washer?

The EPDM washer (4.8×16 and 6.3×19) is compressed under the head of the screw and seals the hole in the Z275 sheet; without it water gets in alongside the screw and the galvanised edge of the hole starts to rust. The washer is vulcanised onto a steel plate, so the head of the screw does not cut it as it is tightened.

How do I choose the screw length for a panel?

The panel thickness plus the engagement in the substructure. For a PIR panel of 80 mm that is GTR W 6.4/7.0 × 100–140 mm on timber depending on the thickness of the batten and GT6 SP and GT12 SP 5.5/6.3 × 90–150 mm on steel depending on the profile; PU panels of 30 and 50 mm need shorter screws from the same series.
