Roof vents — application, standard and installation

Where it is used

The roof vent terminates a vent pipe at the roof — the vent of the drainage system, the ventilation of a bathroom or a kitchen, the ventilation of the roof space — and stops rain from getting into the pipe. The diameter of the vent matches the diameter of the pipe it terminates; the standard diameters follow the downpipes (Ø 80, Ø 100 and Ø 120 mm), larger ones on request. It is made of colour-coated sheet in the colour of the roof covering.

The standard and what it guarantees

The sheet of the vent is steel S320GD, galvanising Z275 (275 g of zinc per m², both sides) to EN 10346, polyester coating 35 µm. The sizing of the venting and the position of the penetration are set by the services design, not by the sheet standard; the vent has to stand above the level of the snow and of the roof covering so that the vent does not become blocked.

What to watch out for during installation

The penetration through the roof is sealed with a flashing or a collar matched to the profile of the covering — with trapezoidal sheet the base plate follows the corrugations — and the vent is slid over the pipe so that the water from the cowl runs onto the covering and not into the pipe. On a cold roof the pipe inside the loft has to be insulated so that condensate does not run back into the installation.

Questions and answers

Frequently asked questions: Roof vents

Which diameter of roof vent should I choose?

The diameter of the vent is the same as the diameter of the pipe it terminates; the standard diameters match the downpipes Ø 80, Ø 100 and Ø 120 mm, larger ones are made on request. The vent is slid over the pipe, so too small a diameter does not seat and too large a one lets rain in alongside the pipe.

How is the penetration of a roof vent through the sheet sealed?

With a flashing or a collar following the profile of the covering, fixed with screws with an EPDM sealing washer (4.8×16 and 6.3×19) and sealed with an elastic sealant for sheet metal; with trapezoidal sheet the base plate follows the corrugations. The water from the vent has to run onto the covering, not down the pipe into the roof.

What is the roof vent made of?

Of colour-coated steel S320GD with Z275 galvanising (275 g of zinc per m²) to EN 10346 and a polyester coating of 35 µm — the same sheet as the roof covering and the flashings, in the same RAL shade.
