Ridge flashings — application, standard and installation

Where it is used

The ridge flashing covers the junction of two roof planes at the top of the roof (the ridge) and stops water and snow from getting under the covering. Modeco makes it to measure for trapezoidal sheet, tile-profile sheet and other sheet-metal coverings, in all the RAL shades of the groups RAL 3009 / 8019 and RAL 7016 / 9005 / 9006 / 9002 / 6028 / 8004.

The standard and what it guarantees

The sheet is steel S320GD, galvanising Z275 (275 g of zinc per m², both sides) to EN 10346, polyester coating 35 µm. It is folded on a CNC machine to a tolerance of 0.2 mm, so the profile repeats identically on every piece. The sheet standard guarantees the steel substrate and the zinc thickness, not the shape — the shape and the developed width are set by the customer.

What to watch out for during installation

The ridge flashing is laid with the pieces overlapping against the direction of the prevailing wind and fixed with screws with an EPDM sealing washer through the crown of the corrugation of the covering, over a saddle washer. With trapezoidal sheet T-35 and T-45 an eaves comb or ventilation triangles go beneath the ridge flashing; they close the corrugations against insects and birds and let the air out of the roof. The width of the ridge flashing depends on the pitch of both planes.

Questions and answers

Frequently asked questions: Ridge flashings

What goes beneath the ridge flashing on a roof of trapezoidal sheet?

An eaves comb or ventilation triangles: they close the open corrugations of the T-35 and T-45 profiles beneath the ridge flashing so that birds and insects cannot get in, and let the air out of the roof space. Without them the ridge flashing made of sheet S320GD stays open over the full height of the corrugation.

In which colours is the ridge flashing made?

In the shades of both groups of colour-coated sheet: RAL 3009 / 8019 and RAL 7016 / 9005 / 9006 / 9002 / 6028 / 8004 — as a rule in the colour of the roof covering, because it is folded from the same sheet S320GD Z275 to EN 10346 with a coating of 35 µm.

How is the ridge flashing fixed?

With screws with an EPDM sealing washer (4.8×16 and 6.3×19) through the crown of the corrugation of the trapezoidal sheet into the substructure, with a saddle washer under the screw so that the corrugation is not crushed. The pieces overlap against the prevailing wind; they are folded to a tolerance of 0.2 mm so that the overlap seats.
