Flat sheet — application, standard and installation

Where it is used

Flat (unprofiled) sheet is used for flashings made to measure, for repairs, for cladding and for sheet-metal details. The range covers galvanised sheet in sheets and cut to measure, colour-coated sheet in the RAL shades of the groups RAL 3009 / 8019 and RAL 7016 / 9005 / 9006 / 9002 / 6028 / 8004, aluminium, copper, stainless steel (acid-resistant, matt and gloss) and decorative sheet with a wood and a rust effect. The thickness is chosen according to the use and to the way it is folded.

The standard and what it guarantees

Galvanised and colour-coated sheet: steel S320GD, galvanising Z275 (275 g of zinc per m², both sides) to EN 10346, polyester coating 35 µm. Aluminium, copper and stainless steel are supplied according to the manufacturer's declaration — EN 10346 (galvanised steel) does not apply to them. Cutting to measure and folding flashings on the CNC machine are carried out to a tolerance of 0.2 mm.

What to watch out for during installation

Flat sheet on a roof needs a solid substrate and folds that stiffen it; large flat areas without folds buckle in the heat. Copper is not laid above galvanised or aluminium sheet — water from copper accelerates the corrosion of zinc and aluminium. It is cut with shears or a nibbler; an angle grinder burns the zinc and the coating at the edge. The protective film is stripped from colour-coated sheet immediately after installation, because the sun bakes it onto the coating.

Which flat sheet should I choose for flashings?

For standard flashings, colour-coated sheet S320GD with Z275 galvanising and a polyester coating of 35 µm in the RAL colour of the roof covering; for long-lasting details without a coating, copper or stainless steel; for light and large flashings, aluminium. Galvanised sheet without a coating is used for concealed parts and backing sheets.

Can copper sheet be combined with galvanised sheet?

Not in the same flow of water: water from copper accelerates the corrosion of zinc, so copper must not be above galvanised sheet Z275 (EN 10346) and must not discharge water into a galvanised gutter. The other way round — galvanised above copper — does no harm. The same applies to copper and aluminium.

What should colour-coated sheet be cut with on site?

With hand or electric sheet-metal shears and with a nibbler. An angle grinder is not used: the hot sparks and the overheated edge burn the zinc (275 g/m²) and the polyester coating (35 µm), so the edge starts to rust beneath the paint.

What does the Z275 designation on galvanised sheet mean?

Z275 means 275 g of zinc per square metre, both sides together, applied by continuous hot-dip galvanising to EN 10346. That is the protection Modeco declares for the whole range of steel sheet S320GD; colour-coated sheet adds a polyester coating of 35 µm on top of it.
