Sandwich panels — application, standard and installation

Where it is used

The sandwich panel joins two steel sheets to an insulating core in a single element that is roof covering, insulation and internal lining at the same time. Modeco supplies PU panels of 30 and 50 mm in RAL 7016 and the PIR panel of 80 mm, for the roofs and walls of halls, canopies, workshops and warehouses. The thickness is chosen according to the thermal calculation for the building.

The standard and what it guarantees

The facings are continuously hot-dip galvanised steel sheet to EN 10346. The PIR core has a reaction to fire of B-s1, d0 to EN 13501-1 — low contribution to fire, little smoke, no flaming droplets; the thermal conductivity of the core is λ = 0.02 W/mK for PIR and about 0.022 W/mK for PU. For a particular panel the manufacturer's declaration of performance applies.

What to watch out for during installation

The panels are fixed through both facings into the substructure with screws with an EPDM sealing washer 6.3×19: GTR W 6.4/7.0 × 100–140 mm into timber, GT6 SP and GT12 SP 5.5/6.3 × 90–150 mm into steel. The screw length is the panel thickness plus the engagement in the substructure. The joints are sealed with butyl or vapour-barrier tape in the groove, because moisture passes through the joints and not through the panel; a roof panel is laid with the overlap of the upper sheet in the direction of flow.
