Square gutters — application, standard and installation

Where it is used

The square (rectangular) gutter is used on contemporary facades, industrial buildings and straight eaves where the half-round profile does not fit visually. Modeco makes it to measure in the developed widths 330, 400, 500 mm with the external cross-sections 9 × 6 cm, 11 × 8 cm, 12 × 12 cm. Because it is made to length and to measure, it is offered on request and not from stock.

The standard and what it guarantees

Hanging roof gutters and rainwater downpipes made of metal sheet are covered by EN 612: the standard defines the terminology, shapes, dimensions and requirements for manufacture, not the calculation of capacity. The sheet the part is roll-formed from is continuously hot-dip galvanised steel Z275 (275 g of zinc per m², both sides) to EN 10346, with a factory-applied colour coating.

What to watch out for during installation

The square gutter needs brackets matched to the rectangular profile and a straight, sound fascia board; the fall towards the outlet is formed as it is on a half-round gutter. The transition to the round downpipe is made with a reducer — for the 11 × 8 cm cross-section (developed width 400) onto a Ø 100 mm pipe. The joints are riveted and sealed in the direction of flow; expansion has to be allowed for as on any sheet-metal gutter.

Questions and answers

Frequently asked questions: Square gutters

What sizes does the square gutter come in?

Modeco makes the square gutter in three sizes: developed width 330 (9 × 6 cm), developed width 400 (11 × 8 cm), developed width 500 (12 × 12 cm). The developed width is the width of the flat strip of sheet before folding; the external measurements are the width and the height of the finished profile.

How is a square gutter connected to a round downpipe?

With a reducer — the transition piece that connects the square cross-section 11 × 8 cm (developed width 400) to the round Ø 100 mm pipe. The reducer is in the roofing accessories category, and the downpipes, bends and pipe clips are the same as for the half-round system.

Why is the square gutter offered on request?

The square gutter is made to measure — the length of the piece, the developed width (330, 400, 500 mm) and the RAL colour are set for each building — so the quotation is drawn up from a drawing or from the eaves measurements, and not from stock.

Which standard applies to the square gutter?

The same as for the half-round gutter: EN 612 for hanging gutters and downpipes made of metal sheet, EN 10346 for the galvanised steel sheet the gutter is folded from (Z275, 275 g of zinc per m²).
