Adhesives and sealants — application, standard and installation

Where it is used

Adhesives and sealants close the joints and overlaps in sheet that the mechanical fixing alone does not seal: polyurethane adhesive for bonding sheets to a substrate and to one another, MS polymer for the elastic sealing of overlaps, rivets, wall abutment flashings and window sills (overpaintable, adheres to sheet, concrete and timber), acetoxy silicone for glass and ceramics. For galvanised and colour-coated sheet, MS polymer is recommended.

The standard and what it guarantees

Sealants are supplied according to the manufacturer's declaration. The sheet they are applied to is S320GD Z275 to EN 10346 with a polyester coating of 35 µm — the sealant has to be neutral towards the zinc and the coating; acetoxy (acid-cure) silicone on galvanised sheet attacks the zinc.

What to watch out for during installation

A sealant does not replace a screw or a rivet: the joint is first fixed mechanically and then sealed. The surface has to be dry and free of dust and grease; a cold cartridge should be brought to room temperature before work. It is applied in an unbroken bead along the overlap, not in spots. Silicone and PU foam are not sealants for sheet-metal joints on the water side.

Questions and answers

Frequently asked questions: Adhesives and sealants

MS polymer or silicone for sheet metal?

MS polymer: it is elastic, overpaintable and neutral towards the zinc and the polyester coating (35 µm). Acetoxy silicone releases acetic acid, which attacks the Z275 zinc at the edges of the sheet, so it is used for glass and ceramics, not for galvanised sheet.

Can an adhesive replace screws or rivets?

No. A joint in sheet S320GD to EN 10346 has to be mechanical — a screw with an EPDM sealing washer (4.8×16 and 6.3×19) or a rivet — and the adhesive and the sealant supplement it: they keep water out of the overlap and reduce rattling. An adhesive softens in the heat, and the sheet lengthens.

How should sheet be prepared before sealing?

A dry, clean surface free of dust, oil and remnants of the protective film; colour-coated sheet with its 35 µm coating must not be abraded. The sealant is applied in an unbroken bead along the overlap and smoothed straight away; the curing time depends on the temperature and the humidity, as stated by the manufacturer.
