The chimney cowl protects the chimney crown from rain and snow, keeps birds out and reduces the wind drawn into the flue. Modeco makes it in a standard version and made to measure — to the external dimensions of the crown and to the number and position of the flue openings — of colour-coated sheet in the colour of the roof covering or of the flashings.
The sheet of the cowl is steel S320GD, galvanising Z275 (275 g of zinc per m², both sides) to EN 10346, polyester coating 35 µm. For solid-fuel chimneys the flue gas temperature and the requirements of the chimney sweep have to be checked — the cowl must not reduce the cross-section of the flue or hold back the flue gases; those requirements are not the subject of the sheet standard.
The cowl stands on legs above the crown, with openings at the sides for the smoke to escape freely; it is fixed with anchors or wall plugs into the masonry crown, not into the roof covering. Before that, the crown is covered by a sheet-metal flashing with a fall to the outside, and the junction of chimney and roof is closed by a wall abutment flashing.
Questions and answers
The external length and width of the chimney crown, the height the cowl has to reach, and the number and position of the flue and ventilation openings — from these the height of the legs and the spacing of the openings are set. The cowl is folded from galvanised steel S320GD Z275 to EN 10346 to a tolerance of 0.2 mm.
As standard of colour-coated steel S320GD, galvanised Z275 (275 g of zinc per m²) to EN 10346, with a polyester coating of 35 µm in the RAL colour of the roof. For chimneys with hot or aggressive flue gases it is made on request of stainless steel sheet from the flat sheet range.
By the legs of the cowl into the masonry crown, with an anchor in concrete or a wall plug in brick — never into the roof covering or into the wall abutment flashing. The side openings have to stay clear over their full height so that the smoke leaves without being held back; the sheet of the cowl is Z275 to EN 10346.
